Hi.

During the pandemic, I used my journalism degree and took to blogging. Not doing so much of that currently as work in the beauty + music worlds open up.

Emo Without the "E": Fall Out Boy

In the wake of Saturday,”* I am back with a new edition of Emo Without the “E” (aka Maybe Ok). This time the highlight is on Chicago’s own… OK Wilmette’s own… Fall Out Boy.

Kings of lengthy song titles and a hit secret comeback in 2013, they are one of the most well known emo bands. With their first album, Take This to Your Grave, they truly put themselves on the map. Whether you are listening to music in your car or you are at a concert when “Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy” starts playing your mood will completely change.

They hit major mainstream success with hits “Dance, Dance” and “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” off of their second album From Under the Cork Tree.

They went on hiatus in 2009 and all ended up working on other projects. I remember seeing Patrick Stump** play a small stage at Lollapalooza in 2011. That same weekend Pete Wentz*** played with his band the Black Cards.

Flash forward to February 2013, an average Chicago day, and find news of Fall Out Boy returning to play together as well as dropping a new album. News of Fall Out Boy playing a show at the Subterranean spread throughout the city like a wild fire. A band that hasn’t played or been together for years was about to perform at a 400 capacity venue. Fall Out Boy fans took to the streets and social media to try to score a ticket. I wasn’t a lucky one, but I lived vicariously through friends that got in. I’ve seen them live enough to know that that specific show was unreal.

In the time since that show and the release of their album Save Rock and Roll, they have definitely explored their sound resulting in MANIA, and compiled another greatest hits album. It will be interesting to see if on their next record they will incorporate more of their older sound on it.

They are scheduled to perform at President-elect Joe Biden’s pre-inauguration virtual concert tomorrow, January 17 . Be sure to check them out and to Fall Out Boy: “Thnks fr th Mmrs.”****
